Kelly & Joel: Black Hills Engagement Photography

After literally months of trying to get together for engagement pictures, Kelly, Joel and I were finally in the same place at the same time. And on top of that, the weather decided to be not only agreeable, but completely perfect. Their wedding is coming up fast, and it was our last chance to make it work. And that's just what we did.

We hung around at Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon, dodging other visitors and trying to talk over the sound of the water. I felt like I was yelling the entire time, but was thankful for the opportunity to get to know Joel and Kelly better. Not only are they beautiful, but kind and easy-going as well. Joel works in Gillete with explosives — but don't worry — it's not as dangerous as it sounds. (There's much more to it than that, but he can explain it better than I can.) Kelly is a nurse, and a good one I'm sure, based on her thoughtful nature.

Joel showed me the exact spot where he proposed, and Kelly smiled at the memory. He said it was a bit of a different scene at that time, with a foot of snow on the walkway and not another soul in sight. He pointed to where he placed the timed camera to catch the moment, and they laughed as they recalled her being upset with him because he was about to ruin the picture. She didn't realize he was getting on one knee.

Kelly and Joel, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedules to meet. I can't wait for your wedding (17 days!) and hope you're enjoying every last minute of your engagement. Here are a few of my favorites!

Dan and Alexa: Black Hills Wedding Photography

Alexa and I were sipping coffee in February when she said something that I have yet to forget. She was talking about how long distance relationships can be stressful and difficult. "There's only so much you can talk about before it becomes repetitive. When it seemed we were running out of things to say, we each bought the same book of short stories, and discussed those."

I know it may sound insignificant, but that small gesture is what I think of when I see Dan and Alexa together. I see them wanting to stay connected. I see their relationship being of utmost importance. And I see clearly the attention they're willing to give their marriage, and to give each other.

It was this impression, along with many other things, that made me excited beyond words to be a small part of their wedding. It seemed everywhere I turned there was yet another labor of love, one more detail thoughtfully chosen. An old bible. Dozens of mason jars. Homemade cream puffs in place of a cake. Four yellow flowers...the last delivered in person.

Their love is simple in it's best form, and it comes noticeably easy, but it will only become better. Their future will be full of meaningful details, flowers just because, and handwritten notes.  The diligence and care that made their wedding a success, will pale in comparison to the care they'll put into their marriage. And because of this, it will last.

Dan and Alexa, thank you so much for the opportunity to photograph your wedding. I loved spending the day with you and your families, and hope you're having a wonderful time on your honeymoon.  Enjoy some of my favorites!

A True Accomplishment.

Fifty-six. That's the number of years my grandparents have been married.

I love getting to see couples just starting out, but it's even more inspiring to see those who have built their lives together.

Thank you for teaching me about commitment and loyalty.  And on this important day, congratulations to you both.

Couldn't help but take some pictures this morning. Everything is so green.

Happy Tuesday!

Yolanda & Wyatt: Black Hills Engagement Photography

I'm sure those of you who know Wyatt and Yolanda won't be at all surprised to learn that I instantly fell in love with their outlook. They were relaxed, cheerful, and up for any idea I may have had.  Typically, I have my clients meet me where we're going, or I drive them so that I can pull over if I get inspired by something on the way. It didn't work like that this time, because their adorable weimaraner, Meise, joined us for the session. (Side note: Brett, if you're reading this, please take notice of how well behaved Meise is in the pictures below. And beautiful... And smart...) Rather than drive separate vehicles, they let me tag along with the three of them. I warned Wyatt that I may ask him to pull over if the above stated inspiration should hit. He was willing to comply, and suggested we wear our seat belts.

The purpose of an engagement session (in addition to beautiful photos, of course), is to get to know the bride and groom.  Oftentimes, the drive serves this purpose perfectly, and this outing was no different. We got to chat about Yolanda's school year coming to an end, and Wyatt's daily commute through the hills for work. We talked about the wedding planning and dog collars, student teachers and the hectic May they've had.

But most importantly, I got to see them together - discussing and laughing and tossing around ideas. I couldn't help but notice how hard he made her laugh (reverse dancing?) and how completely comfortable they are with one another. It seemed only right that soon they'll officially be a family.

Wyatt and Yolanda, thank you so much for the Sunday drive. I loved getting to know you better, and appreciate your patience with my backseat navigation. Enjoy my favorites!
